“Drive Safely – Arrive Securely” – Preventive campaign by SVR Bitola in cooperation with the Road Safety Council and a vehicle inspection station

Police officers from the Traffic Safety Police Station at SVR Bitola, the Prevention Unit, and police officers from OVR Prilep within SVR Bitola launched the preventive-educational campaign “Drive Safely – Arrive Securely.” The activity was carried out at several locations in Bitola and Prilep, as well as at the exits of the cities, where drivers were given leaflets containing useful advice. In Prilep, the activity was also supported in cooperation with a vehicle inspection station, where free measurements of tire tread pattern and depth were provided for drivers.

Ahead of the winter season, the campaign aims to remind drivers that from 15 November to 15 March it is mandatory to have and carry winter equipment in their vehicles, and to educate them on the proper use of such equipment.
Prescribed winter equipment for motor vehicles up to 3,500 kilograms includes: winter tires with a minimum tread depth of 4 mm across the entire surface on all four wheels, or summer tires with a minimum tread depth of 4 mm accompanied by snow chains for the drive wheels. For four-wheel-drive vehicles (4×4), winter tires on all wheels must have a minimum tread depth of 6 mm, or summer tires with a minimum depth of 4 mm and snow chains.

Winter conditions carry a higher level of risk: slippery roads due to snow, ice or black ice, reduced visibility due to heavy fog or precipitation, longer braking distances and instability during sudden maneuvers, as well as increased driver fatigue.
Therefore, SVR Bitola and the Prevention Unit appeal to all traffic participants to follow these recommendations:

  • follow the information about weather and road conditions;

  • adjust driving according to road conditions;

  • respect traffic rules, regulations, and road signs;

  • carry winter equipment in the vehicle and use it properly;

  • perform a vehicle check-up;

  • maintain a safe distance between vehicles;

  • avoid sudden braking and sudden decrease or increase in speed.

Road safety is a shared responsibility, and only through joint efforts can a culture of responsible and safe behavior in traffic be built.
