The Bureau for Public Security is a body within the Ministry of Internal Affairs that carries out police duties within the Ministry. Its organization and competences are regulated by the Law on Police (“Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia” No. 114/06, 6/09, 145/12, and 41/14).
The Bureau for Public Security is responsible for: conceptual planning, monitoring, and analyzing the security situation and the causes of crime and threats to public safety; general and professional oversight and control over the work of the Police organizational units; processing of personal data under conditions and in a manner prescribed by this and other specific laws; implementation of ratified international agreements on police cooperation and other international acts under the Police’s jurisdiction; ensuring the Police are prepared to act and operate under complex security conditions; and other duties established by law.
The Bureau is headed by a Director, who is appointed and dismissed by the Government of the Republic of Macedonia on the proposal of the Minister, for a term of four years.
To perform police duties within the Bureau’s competence, the following organizational units have been established:
- Sector for General and Special Police Duties
Responsible for daily police operations in the field of public order and peace, prevention, as well as police activities related to complex security situations. - Sector for Traffic Affairs
Responsible for daily police operations in the field of traffic and traffic prevention; oversees the implementation of the driving exam and the qualification test for driving instructors; participates in the process of issuing and revoking driving instructor licenses and other activities related to traffic. - Sector for Criminal Police
Coordinates measures and activities with organizational units responsible for criminal matters and with Regional Centers for Border Affairs, aiming for consistent field operation of police services. - Sector for Criminal Intelligence and Analysis
Collects, processes, and analyzes data and information based on pre-established methodologies and processing standards; prepares analytical products and reports and disseminates them to organizational units within the Bureau for Public Security. - Sector for Border Affairs and Migration
Responsible for daily police operations in the area of border affairs, police activities related to cross-border crime and migration, and matters concerning foreigners and readmission. - Sector for General Affairs and Human Resource Management
Responsible for performing specific professional tasks for the needs of the Bureau for Public Security in the areas of human resource management, legal and financial affairs, personal data protection, staff development, and representation of communities, ensuring gender equality.
Within the Bureau for Public Security, a Registry for NATO Cooperation and Classified Information Security has been established. It handles activities related to the implementation of the Action Plan for NATO Membership of the Republic of Macedonia and strengthened efforts for EU integration.
