The Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Astrit Iseni, today delivered a address at the promotion of the research report "Preventing Harm in North Macedonia," conducted by UNICEF, dedicated to the risks faced by children in the digital environment and the enhancement of mechanisms for their protection.
The event was attended by the United Nations Resident Coordinator in the country, Rita Columbia, the UNICEF representative, Ms. Leslie Miller, as well as representatives from national institutions and international organizations.
In his address, Deputy Minister Iseni praised UNICEF's comprehensive and inclusive approach in conducting the research, which involved institutions, professionals, and citizens, emphasizing that the protection of children in the digital environment requires a coordinated response from the entire society.
"Rapid digitalization has opened vast opportunities for communication, education, and development, but it has also brought new risks of abuse and exploitation. Therefore, the protection of children is a shared responsibility, and only through partnership, inclusivity, and strong institutional coordination can we create a safe digital environment for every child," Iseni highlighted.
He pointed out that the report provides a better understanding of young people's behavior in the online space, the most common risks they face, and the areas where a more effective institutional response is needed. The recommendations, as he emphasized, serve as a foundation for improving the legal framework, supporting professionals who work with children, and enhancing practical mechanisms for prevention and protection.
Iseni stressed that the Ministry of Internal Affairs plays a significant role in this area through preventive activities, raising public awareness, timely detection of risks, and collaboration with domestic institutions and international partners.
"This research is not just a document, but a call to action. We need better prevention in schools and communities, more effective information sharing among institutions, clear procedures for reporting and responding, and appropriate support for children and families. The Ministry will continue to enhance the capacities of the police and strengthen coordination with educational and social services," stated Deputy Minister Iseni.
In conclusion, he expressed gratitude to UNICEF, the researchers, international partners, and national institutions that contributed to the preparation of the report, emphasizing that the Ministry of Internal Affairs remains committed to implementing the recommendations that will contribute to greater safety and well-being for children in Macedonia.
