Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Astrit Iseni is currently participating in New York at the Global Forum for the Review of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration of the United Nations, which is taking place from May 5 to May 8. The main meeting of the forum will be held tomorrow, May 7, where Deputy Minister Iseni is scheduled to address the attendees.
The forum serves as the primary intergovernmental global platform where member states discuss and exchange progress in the implementation of all aspects of the Global Compact for Migration, including its connection to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with the participation of relevant international and institutional actors.
Within the framework of the forum, today Deputy Minister Iseni held a working meeting with representatives of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), during which the successful and long-term cooperation was confirmed, both at the national and regional levels. The contribution of IOM in strengthening border management, training officials, and modernizing systems in accordance with international standards was emphasized.
During the meeting, several joint projects funded through the IPA programs of the European Union were presented, aimed at enhancing systems for the identification and registration of migrants, strengthening capacities to combat organized crime, as well as improving migrants' access to protection and legal mechanisms. Additionally, the regional dimension of cooperation was highlighted, contributing to a coordinated and comprehensive approach to migration management in the Western Balkans.
