Toshkovski and Llamallari Sign Agreement on the Establishment of Joint Border Crossing Points and Joint Border Controls between Macedonia and Albania

Today (27.06.2026), the Minister of Internal Affairs, Panche Toshkovski, and the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Albania, Besfort Llamallari, signed in Peshkopi, Albania, an Agreement on the Establishment of Joint Border Crossing Points and the Implementation of Joint Border Controls between the two countries.

This agreement establishes a modern and functional framework for more efficient management of the shared border, with the aim of facilitating the movement of people and goods, enhancing security, and reducing waiting times at border crossings.

The agreement provides for formalized institutional cooperation, phased implementation through protocols tailored to each location, as well as strengthened mechanisms for coordination and information exchange between the competent authorities.

In his address, Minister Toshkovski emphasized that the agreement represents a significant step toward more efficient, safer, and more predictable border management, with direct benefits for citizens, businesses, and institutions.

He stressed that joint border procedures not only facilitate the flow of traffic but also strengthen the capacity of both countries to combat cross-border crime, human trafficking, and other security risks through coordinated action and information sharing.

It was particularly highlighted that implementation will take place gradually and in a controlled manner, ensuring that each joint border crossing point is fully operationally and legally prepared before becoming functional.

Minister Toshkovski expressed gratitude to the expert teams, legal advisors, police officers, and all institutions from both countries that participated in the preparation of the agreement, emphasizing that their work was crucial to achieving this result.

The signing of the agreement at the Blato border crossing represents an important milestone in bilateral cooperation between Macedonia and Albania and confirms the shared commitment to modern, efficient, and secure border management.

This completes the process of establishing this system with the three neighboring countries of the Republic of Macedonia that are not part of the Schengen Area, considering that the system is already successfully functioning with Serbia and Kosovo.
