Today (11.12.2025), the Ministry of Interior organized a workshop focused on the Draft Methodology for Road Traffic Safety Indicators in the country. The workshop, which opened with introductory remarks by the Head of the Traffic Safety Sector at the Ministry of Interior, Maja Arsovska Manov, gathered numerous representatives from various stakeholders and institutions.
The document was developed by the Ministry of Interior with the support of UNDP, within the Programme for Supporting the Implementation of the National Development Strategy (NDS), implemented in close coordination with the Government’s General Secretariat.
The methodology covers eight key thematic areas that are crucial for improving road safety: speed, seat belts and child restraints, protective helmets, alcohol and drugs, distraction, vehicles, road infrastructure, and post-crash response.
These methodological frameworks enable a better understanding of risk factors and the creation of more effective, data-driven policies.
A key part of the process is the development of the National Integrated Road Safety Database, one of the measures outlined in the National Development Strategy and led by the Ministry of Interior. The new geo-referenced GIS platform will enable:
-
unified and standardized data collection,
-
integration of historical and real-time data,
-
more efficient analysis of trends, risks, and critical points,
-
improved planning and prioritization of interventions by institutions,
-
increased public transparency and accountability.
The workshop was attended by representatives from all relevant institutions, the NGO sector, the business community, academia, and domestic experts. Discussions focused on how the proposed indicators will contribute to stronger and more effective data-driven policies aimed at greater protection for all road users and reducing the consequences of traffic accidents.
The National Integrated Road Safety Database (NIRSD), led by the Ministry of Interior and supported by UNDP, will become operational during 2026. This represents a key systemic reform that directly enhances citizen safety.
With the National Integrated Road Safety Database, the Ministry of Interior will ensure:
-
faster and more accurate identification of high-risk locations,
-
stronger preventive measures and timely interventions,
-
real-time insight into road conditions,
-
quicker response to incidents,
-
better allocation of resources,
-
greater transparency toward the public.
This means more safety, fewer accidents, and higher-quality policies, bringing direct benefits to all citizens and contributing to the improvement of the national road safety system.
