MoI and the National Road Safety Council launch the winter campaign “Drive Safely – Arrive Safely”

The Ministry of Interior, together with the National Road Safety Council, launched the winter campaign under the motto “Drive Safely – Arrive Safely,” with a preventive and educational activity at the “Petrovec” toll station, conducted jointly with police officers from the Traffic Affairs Sector at the Bureau of Public Security and officers from the Mobile Unit for Road Traffic Safety.

Ahead of the winter conditions, the campaign aims to remind drivers that from November 15 to March 15, it is mandatory to possess the prescribed winter equipment, as well as to educate drivers on its proper use.

For motor vehicles weighing up to 3,500 kg, the prescribed winter equipment includes winter tires with a minimum tread depth of 4 mm on all four wheels, or summer tires with a minimum tread depth of 4 mm along with snow chains for the driving wheels. For four-wheel-drive (4×4) vehicles, the requirement is winter tires on all four wheels with a minimum tread depth of 6 mm, or summer tires with a minimum tread depth of 4 mm together with snow chains.

Winter conditions bring a higher level of risk: slippery roads due to snow, ice, or black ice; reduced visibility caused by fog or precipitation; longer braking distances and instability during sudden movements; as well as increased driver fatigue.

The Ministry of Interior and the National Road Safety Council appeal to all traffic participants to follow these recommendations:

  • monitor weather and road condition updates;

  • adjust your driving according to road conditions;

  • obey traffic rules, regulations, and road signs;

  • carry winter equipment in your vehicle and use it properly;

  • perform a winter check-up of your vehicle;

  • maintain a safe distance between vehicles;

  • avoid sudden braking and abrupt changes in speed.

With this campaign, we send the message that road safety is a shared responsibility — and only through joint effort can we build a culture of responsible and safe behavior in traffic.
