Minister of Interior Panche Toshkovski today presented the Ministry of Interior's performance report for the past two years, emphasizing that from the very beginning of his mandate, the Ministry had set a clear objective—to ensure that the law applies equally to everyone and to build a more efficient, professional, and modern Ministry.
Presenting the Ministry's achievements, Minister Toshkovski highlighted that North Macedonia has recorded its lowest crime rate in the past 20 years, attributing this result to the dedicated and continuous work of police officers and state institutions.
During the reporting period, more than 30 organized criminal groups were dismantled, while 6.2 tonnes of various narcotic drugs were seized. Cocaine seizures increased by more than 300 percent, and more than 550 illegal firearms were removed from illicit circulation. At the same time, property crime declined by more than 30 percent, while robberies and aggravated thefts fell by over 40 percent.
Particular emphasis was placed on the "Safe City" project, which, after years of announcements, has finally been implemented and put into operation. During the first five months of its implementation, the number of fatalities in road traffic accidents decreased by 40 percent, with 33 fatalities recorded compared to 55 during the same period last year.
Regarding international cooperation, Minister Toshkovski announced that an agreement with the Republic of Albania on the establishment of joint border crossing points and the implementation of joint border control activities would be signed today. This completes the "One Stop" joint border control system with all neighboring countries outside the Schengen Area, following the earlier establishment of similar systems with the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Kosovo.
The Minister also highlighted investments in future generations of police officers, noting that, after many years, the Secondary Police School is being re-established. The first generation of students is scheduled to begin classes on 1 September this year.
In addition, new administrative service offices have been opened in several municipalities where such services were previously unavailable. A significant number of certificates and official documents can now be obtained electronically, allowing citizens to access services without waiting times or unnecessary administrative procedures.
Concluding his address, Minister Toshkovski stated that the results achieved provide a strong foundation for continuing the reform process and further strengthening the Ministry's institutional capacities. He stressed that many challenges remain and that the Ministry will continue working to enhance public safety, stability, and the rule of law.
