On 1 September 2026, police officers from the Ohrid Lake Border Surveillance Police Station conducted action controls in the waters of Lake Ohrid related to the criminal offence of “illegal fishing,” as well as activities to locate fishing nets and other fishing equipment and gear.
During the operation, in the area between the Struga villages of Kališta and Radožda, 20 so-called gillnets were discovered. The use of such nets for fishing is strictly prohibited. The nets had a total length of approximately 4,000 metres and contained 872 fish, specifically Ohrid belvica, with a total weight of 116.9 kilograms.
Following instructions from a public prosecutor, police officers from the Lake Police and the Regional Center for Border Affairs – West removed the fishing nets and the caught fish from the lake. The competent Fisheries Inspectorate was subsequently notified.
In the coming period, the Ohrid Lake Border Surveillance Police Station will continue conducting intensified action controls aimed at suppressing illegal fishing, identifying perpetrators of this criminal offence, and protecting the fish stock of Lake Ohrid.
