Guide for Proper Installation of Winter Equipment in Vehicles

Guide for Proper Installation of Winter Equipment in Vehicles

With the beginning of the winter season, from 15 November to 15 March, the legal obligation for using winter equipment in all motor vehicles comes into force. The Regulation on Mandatory Vehicle Equipment precisely defines what each vehicle must have under winter conditions.

According to the regulation, winter tires are considered those tires that have on their sidewall the markings “M+S”, “M/S”, “M-S”, or the snowflake symbol on a stylized three-peak mountain.

But when road conditions become truly demanding, snow chains are essential—yet do we know how to properly install them?

Let us demonstrate step by step how to correctly install snow chains.

First, stop in a safe place where you will be visible and will not obstruct traffic. Secure the vehicle, turn on your hazard lights, and place a warning triangle at a safe and visible distance behind the vehicle. Activate the handbrake. If the vehicle is not easily visible on the roadway, make sure the warning triangle is properly positioned.

Unpack the snow chains and carefully untangle them. Check for any knots or damaged parts. If needed and possible, lift the vehicle with a jack to make access to the wheels easier.

Place the chains under the drive wheels — the wheels that propel the vehicle. From the rear side of the wheel, connect the carrying ring of the chain. This is the first part that must be fastened.

Then, pull the remaining chains over the tire from the front side of the wheel and connect them diagonally so that they wrap around the sides of the wheel and join across the front.

Tighten the chains evenly so they fit firmly on the tire without being too tight or too loose. If necessary, recheck the chains after driving a short distance.

Properly installed snow chains provide greater stability, control, and safe braking under winter conditions.

Remember — winter equipment is not only a legal obligation; it is essential for your safety. With winter tires and correctly installed snow chains, you protect your own safety and the safety of all other road users.

Drive safely, arrive safely!
